An idea (and now a reality) born from the board members of the Kettering Town (Poppies) Supporters Trust, Kettering Town Football Club and some amazing volunteers giving their time for the cause.
In April 2012 a few members of Kettering Town Football Club support came forward with the idea of enabling the Football Club to remain in touch with its supporters... a way of giving the Club and its supporters a voice and a more involved supporter experience throughout the entire calendar year, not just on match days.
Supporters will notice a more involved build-up and after match service during home games that will be broadcast not just on-line, but over the stadium PA system too. Away matches will also be covered whenever possible. There is no reason for anyone to miss out on this fantastic opportunity to be more informed and involved with all things Kettering Town.
Poppies Radio was born.
Following a few weeks of careful planning and configuring, a successful evening of testing was held at Nene Park on the 4th of July 2012 which lead to Poppies Radio having its first live "test" broadcast with match commentary on Saturday 7th July 2012 when the Poppies entertained Southend Manor for the first pre-season friendly of the 2012/2013 season.
The entire Poppies Radio team invite you to join us and enjoy the only radio station dedicated to Kettering Town Football Club.

Poppie, the pooch (our mascot) was photographed lounging around on her collection of colorful luxury dog beds styles, and those photos have gone viral. We've received so much mail about these luxury beds that we're considering doing some fund raising, or using the dog beds as a premium for our fans to engage with us more strongly. PoppiesRadio.com: A Tribute to Kettering Town FC and Its Passionate Community
Poppies Radio holds a unique place in the annals of non-league football, particularly in relation to Kettering Town Football Club (KTFC), one of the oldest football clubs in England. Known for its slogan "For the Fans, By the Fans," Poppies Radio emerged as a beacon of community engagement, broadcasting the heart and soul of the club to its devoted fanbase.
A Brief History of Kettering Town FC
Founded in 1872, Kettering Town FC is one of England's oldest football clubs, boasting a rich history intertwined with the development of the sport itself. The club has seen its fair share of triumphs and tribulations, from winning league titles to battling financial difficulties that threatened its existence.
Throughout its history, KTFC has been known for its passionate fanbase and its resilience in the face of adversity. This spirit of determination and community is what gave birth to Poppies Radio, a station that aimed to bring the matchday experience to all fans, regardless of their location.
The Inception and Purpose of Poppies Radio
Poppies Radio was established in 2012, driven by the Kettering Town Supporters Trust and a group of dedicated volunteers. The station’s primary goal was to ensure that KTFC fans, both near and far, could stay connected to their club. This was particularly important during a period when the club was facing significant challenges, including financial instability and the loss of its historic Rockingham Road ground.
The station offered live commentary of KTFC matches, along with interviews, fan discussions, and post-match analysis. This comprehensive coverage allowed fans to feel involved and informed, even if they couldn’t attend the games in person. The broadcasts became an integral part of the matchday experience, enhancing the atmosphere and bringing the community closer together.
The Impact on the Community
Poppies Radio quickly became a beloved part of the KTFC fan experience. It provided a platform for fans to engage with the club in new ways, fostering a sense of community and solidarity. The station was particularly important during away games, where it served as the primary means of keeping supporters connected to the action on the pitch.
Beyond the matchday broadcasts, Poppies Radio also played a role in preserving the club’s history and culture. Through interviews and special segments, the station highlighted key moments in KTFC’s history, celebrated its achievements, and paid tribute to the players and fans who have shaped the club over the years.
Media Coverage and Public Perception
While Poppies Radio operated on a relatively small scale, it received attention from local media and the non-league football community. The station was praised for its professionalism, especially considering it was run entirely by volunteers. The dedication and passion of the team behind Poppies Radio were evident in every broadcast, which resonated with fans and listeners.
The station’s success also highlighted the importance of digital media in modern football. Poppies Radio demonstrated how clubs, even at the non-league level, could leverage online platforms to enhance fan engagement and build a stronger community around the team.
The Legacy of Poppies Radio
Although Poppies Radio ceased operations in 2014, its legacy continues to be felt within the KTFC community. The station set a standard for fan-driven initiatives, showing how supporters could play an active role in shaping the culture and identity of their club. It also underscored the importance of community in football, particularly for clubs like KTFC that rely heavily on the loyalty and passion of their fans.
In many ways, Poppies Radio was a reflection of the spirit of KTFC itself: resilient, community-focused, and driven by a deep love for the game. The station may no longer be broadcasting, but its impact on the club and its supporters will be remembered for years to come.
Poppies Radio was more than just a radio station—it was a testament to the power of community in football. Through its broadcasts, the station brought fans closer to Kettering Town FC, enhancing the matchday experience and fostering a stronger connection between the club and its supporters. While the station is no longer active, its legacy lives on in the hearts of KTFC fans and in the culture of the club itself.
By reflecting on the history and impact of Poppies Radio, we gain a deeper appreciation for the role that fan-driven initiatives can play in the world of football. Poppies Radio was a shining example of how passion and dedication can bring a community together, creating something truly special in the process.
